Word counts in OneNote 2010? We can do that!

I have been testing OneNote 2010 for a while. Long enough to have just gotten used to running it without many of my favorite add-ins. Today, Twitter user @MegMontpetit mentioned the OneNote Word Count add-in that Jeff Cardon made for OneNote 2007. I used to use the tool all the time, but dropped it when I moved to OneNote 2010.

@MegMontpetit found it on the OneNote PowerToys site. You can download it from many of the OneNote blogs on the OneNote mix as well.

The tool does just what it says it will: It counts words - in your page or in the title. But it also counts:
  • Characters (with and without counting spaces)
  • Outlines
  • Outline elements
  • Inked words

I build most of my blog posts for this blog, The Social Media Party, and Vitamin CH in OneNote. Word counts are very useful bits of information for bloggers. The tool is much more convenient than copying my finished pieces into Word and doing the counts there. Nudged by @MegMontpetit's tweet, I decide to see if I could install the tool on OneNote 2010.

Installing the tool is straightforward. Download, then uncompress the zip file. Double click the Setup.exe and off it goes. You can even install it with OneNote running. (If this is the first add-in you have added, you will need to close and re-open OneNote to use the tool.)

The button for the tool will appear in the "Add-Ins" tab of your OneNote 2010 ribbon. Click the button and you get a pop-up with the counts for the current page. The counts for this post are:

I should have known: No problems at all. I even learned something. Once you run the tool, you can leave it open and see the results. It doesn't update as you type: The window is just for reference. Need updated numbers? Close the window and click the button again.

Which add-ins and powertoys are on your must install list? Let me know here or in the community. Thinking that a mix of them might be in the future.
